My dad has Parkinson's and dementia

Over the last year he's experienced a few health challenges. From hospitalizations to nursing facilities to home health, I've had to step into the role of caregiver and advocate to help my parents receive the care they truly deserve. His journey is a big reason I went into private practice!

In the summer of 2021, my dad ended up in the hospital after a fall. Turns out he was almost septic and needed to have a colostomy asap! This was one of the scariest times for my family as the doctors weren't sure how he'd recover and with COVID, trying to see and talk to my dad was challenging.

When I went to visit my dad, he still had a feeding tube in his nose. Now these are only supposed to be in for a few days. My dad kept pulling at his and I know he wanted it out. The doctor told my mom that signing a DNR/DNI was the only way my dad would be allowed to eat by mouth.

I wanted my dad’s feeding tube removed and knew he could eat (of course I performed my own bedside swallow exam at the hospital).

We were told because of his past 3 failed speech therapy attempts he was no longer safe to eat and too high an aspiration risk. And as a result, if we wanted the feeding tube removed… we should sign a DNR/DNI so he can eat.

A swallow study was never performed. No one pushed to try again because my dad was too tired to participate in therapy.

But how could my family make life or death decisions without getting the full picture of my dad’s ability to swallow?

Without advocating for a swallow study and demanding another SLP eval, my mom would’ve been forced to sign a DNR/DNI.

My dad is happily eating regular foods and thin liquids today!
